  • Apple's revenue in India surged by 42% to $8.7 billion last year, signaling the country's growing importance in Apple's global market strategy.

  • iPhone shipments in India experienced a robust growth of 39%, reaching 9.2 million units, showcasing the expanding consumer base and purchasing power within the nation.

  • With India's share of iPhone shipments and revenue rising from 1% to 4% in just five years, projections suggest India could surpass China as Apple's largest iPhone market by 2027 if current growth trends persist.

In a testament to its burgeoning presence in India, Apple reported a staggering 42 per cent surge in revenue within the country, reaching a remarkable $8.7 billion last year. This meteoric rise, as detailed by foreign brokerage Morgan Stanley, highlights India's increasing significance in Apple's global market strategy. Notably, iPhone shipments also saw a robust growth of 39 per cent, with 9.2 million units dispatched across the nation in the same period.

Analysts underscored India's evolving role in Apple's narrative, noting a substantial uptick in its share of iPhone shipments and revenue. From constituting a mere 1 per cent of Apple's market five years ago, India's contribution has now escalated to 4 per cent, signaling a remarkable trajectory. Remarkably, if this growth trajectory persists while Chinese iPhone shipments remain stagnant, India could surpass China to become Apple's largest iPhone market by 2027, according to projections outlined in the report.

Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, recently heralded India's performance, citing a record-breaking quarter in revenue for the company. This achievement not only underscores Apple's success but also reflects the burgeoning consumer base and purchasing power within India. Despite India's overall smartphone shipments remaining steady at 152 million units in 2023, Apple managed to cross the 10-million-unit threshold in shipments, securing the top position in revenue for the first time in a calendar year.

The Indian government's proactive measures to bolster domestic manufacturing have further catalyzed Apple's expansion within the country. In January, import duties on parts essential for mobile phone manufacturing were slashed from 15 per cent to 10 per cent. This strategic move aims to incentivize companies like Apple to ramp up local production, thereby reducing reliance on imports and fostering economic growth. By facilitating a conducive environment for manufacturing, India is poised to emerge as a pivotal hub for Apple's premium smartphone production, aligning with the government's vision of self-reliance and technological advancement.

As Apple continues to deepen its roots in India, the implications extend beyond mere market expansion. The company's success narrative intertwines with India's economic trajectory, reflecting the country's potential as a lucrative market for global tech giants. With concerted efforts from both the private sector and government, India's ascent as a tech powerhouse appears increasingly inevitable, with Apple leading the charge towards a future defined by innovation and economic prosperity.
