Indian business tycoon Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, has been named as a member of the Advisory Committee to the President of the 28th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This prestigious appointment reflects Ambani's commitment to addressing climate change and transitioning Reliance Industries toward renewable energy initiatives. He joins a diverse group of global leaders on the COP28 Advisory Council, including Larry Fink, Olafur Grimsson, Laurent Fabius, Francesco La Camera, and Bob Dudley. The COP28 UAE Advisory Committee comprises experts from different continents, representing various sectors related to climate change.


Mukesh Ambani's appointment as a member of the COP28 Advisory Committee highlights his active involvement in climate change issues. Alongside Sunita Narain, the Director General of the Centre for Science and Environment, Ambani is the only Indian representative on the committee. This recognition underscores his position as a prominent figure in India's corporate and environmental landscape. As the Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, Ambani is leading the company's transition away from traditional crude oil refining and petrochemicals towards renewable energy sources.

The COP28 UAE Advisory Committee brings together climate experts from across the globe, representing various sectors such as policy, industry, energy, finance, civil society, youth, and humanitarian action. The committee consists of 31 members, with 65 percent of them hailing from the Global South, ensuring diverse perspectives and representation. The expertise and insights of this council will play a crucial role in providing guidance and counsel to the COP Presidency leading up to COP28 and beyond. Notable leaders on the committee include Larry Fink, Olafur Grimsson, Laurent Fabius, Francesco La Camera, and Bob Dudley.


The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been chosen as the host country for the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the UNFCCC. Scheduled to take place from November 30 to December 12, 2023, the event will be held at Dubai Expo City. COP is the primary decision-making body of the UNFCCC, which was established in 1992 during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (Rio Summit). This conference serves as a platform for nations to collaborate and address the challenges posed by climate change. The rotation of COP venues among different UN regions ensures global participation and inclusivity.
